Make Health Your New Year's Resolution

OSWEGO COUNTY - The New Year's Day holiday has long been a time for reflection on the personal changes we want to make as we look forward to a happy and healthy new year. While health-related goals are popular New Year's resolutions for many, they can be difficult to begin.

Dr. Dennis Norfleet, director of public health for the Oswego Health Department offers the following tips to start leading a healthy lifestyle.

  • Make healthy food choices. Grab snacks that are good for you, such as fruit, nuts or low-fat cheese.
  • Be active for at least two and a half hours each week. Try simple things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Protect yourself from injury or disease by wearing a helmet, sunscreen and insect repellent when necessary.
  • Make an appointment for a check-up, vaccination or screening.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Be smoke-free. If you are ready to quit, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) for free counseling and resources.
  • Get enough sleep. Remember that sleep is a necessity, not a luxury.
