Young Artists Are Encouraged to Get Involved in Oswego Mural Project

Oswego - Spring is almost here and that means plans are being made for the Springboard Mural Project along West Linear Park in Oswego.

"Starting our ninth year of artwork, the mural project is actively seeking interested youth artists who would like to create a piece of artwork and paint it in a public space in the City of Oswego," said Kristen Slimmer, youth activities coordinator for the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

Youth ages eight and up are welcome to participate. Children ages eight to 12 must have a parent or guardian in attendance with them during painting.

"We welcome any and all levels of skill and ability," said Slimmer. "Family members are welcome to submit entries as well. This can be a family event!"

The mural project is a youth-focused initiative with the design and implementation directed by local young people with the support of the City of Oswego, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and AmeriCorps. Murals are located on West Linear Park along the river near the Utica Street Bridge and are designed and created by local students. Painting will begin over summer vacation.

"The project was originally a city-sponsored community development plan to address graffiti issues. It has continued on with that concern, but has also grown into a community project that brings out our local youth talent and demonstrates community togetherness, making this a successful project year after year," said Slimmer.

Art submissions should be mailed to: Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, Attn: Kristen Slimmer, 70 Bunner St, Oswego, NY 13126.

Applications and art submissions must be received no later than Friday, May 26. All submissions will be sent to the Oswego Common Council for approval. Specific details for artwork submissions may be found on the project application.

For additional information or an application to participate in this project, please contact Slimmer at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, phone (315) 349-3575 or e-mail kslimmer@oswegocounty.com.
