OSWEGO - Children who have experienced the loss of a loved one are encouraged to apply to Camp Rainbow of Hope, a three-day residential camp that takes place every August at Camp Hollis. The program is sponsored by Friends of Oswego County Hospice, Inc., the Oswego County Health Department's Hospice Program, and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau's division of parks and recreation.
Open to Oswego County children ages 8 to 12, Camp Rainbow of Hope will be Aug. 14 through 16 at Camp Hollis.
"Camp Rainbow of Hope is a three-day, two-night residential camp experience for Oswego County children who have experienced a loss of a loved one," said Betty Dunsmoor, LMSW, director of Camp Rainbow of Hope for the Oswego County Hospice Program. "The program is led by licensed social workers who are trained on bereavement issues. Licensed nurses are on site during camp to provide any medical support necessary. It's a place where children can acknowledge their loss of a loved one, develop coping skills, learn to accept the stages of grief, and celebrate the lives of those they have lost."
Campers take part in story-telling, memory books, a healing circle, and recreational activities such as hiking, swimming, campfires and arts and crafts. A trained volunteer "big buddy" works with individual campers to help them process their experience.
Camp Rainbow of Hope received the National Association of Counties Legacy Award for Excellence and Innovation in 2003, and was recognized with one of 22 Acts of Caring Awards for outstanding service to children and youth.
Located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Camp Hollis has been owned and operated by the county of Oswego as a residential children's camp since 1946. Facilities include sleeping cabins with indoor plumbing and electricity, a full medical station, swimming pool, campfire circle, hiking trails and a spacious dining hall.
There is no charge to attend Camp Rainbow of Hope, thanks to the generous support of Friends of Oswego County Hospice, Inc.
Parents or guardians of children ages 8 to 12 who would like their child to attend Camp Rainbow of Hope may call Friends of Oswego County Hospice at 315-343-5223 for an application or visit www.friendsofhospice.org.
