March 5, 2018There are jobs in Oswego County after high school graduation -
Oswego - Oswego County high school juniors and seniors will once again have the chance to meet local employers and training providers who can help start them down the path to a great career at the fourth annual Training & Careers Expo at SUNY Oswego's Swetman Gym. The event will take place Wednesday, March 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Interested high school juniors and seniors can contact their school guidance office for registration information.
"The Expo is designed to inspire Oswego County students who are about to graduate to consider rewarding careers based right here in our area," said Chad Whelsky, a member of the planning committee. "We believe if we connect the future local workforce with employers now, they'll be able to prepare for the good-paying jobs, with a limited amount of training, after graduation."
Local providers will provide information on training opportunities from apprenticeships to associate degree programs.
"The focus of this event is on careers that a person can prepare for with two years or less of training," Whelsky added. In addition, SUNY Oswego Career Services will be available to assist students with job preparation skills - such as interviewing, resume/cover letter-writing and the skills needed to keep a job.
The Expo will use a "trade show" format, with booths throughout Swetman Gym to allow for efficient access to employers and training providers. Participants will provide interactive demonstrations whenever possible to give students a better insight into each career.
The event is organized by staff from Oswego County Workforce NY, CiTi, SUNY Oswego, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the Phoenix Central School District.
The fourth annual Training & Careers Expo is made possible through the generous support of several sponsors: Exelon Generation, SUNY Oswego, Central & Northern New York Building And Construction Trades Council, The Workforce Development Board of Oswego County, Oswego Walmart Supercenter, the Oswego County Counselors Association, and Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 73.
