NEW HAVEN - The Oswego County Health Department's Environmental Division will hold the 28th annual Tap Water Taste Contest (formerly known as the Best Tasting Drinking Water Contest) Wednesday, June 13, at the Oswego County Regional Market, 3921 Route 104, in the Town of New Haven. Located at J&M Warehouse and Storage, the Oswego County Regional Market is open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday through Sept. 26.
Visitors can vote for their favorite samples of drinking water from municipal systems in Oswego County during the tap water contest. Health department representatives will distribute educational materials about the importance of safe drinking water.
"This contest gives people an opportunity to learn more about the processes necessary to deliver clean and safe water to the public," said Natalie Roy, principal public health sanitarian for the Oswego County Health Department. "The goal of the Tap Water Taste Contest is to raise public awareness of the value and quality of public tap water through a fun, non-scientific, and publicly involved contest."
In 2017 the village of Pulaski captured first place in the informal contest. The winner of the local competition will advance to the regional competition and regional winners will compete statewide at New York State Fair in Syracuse. Awards are presented to the regional and state winners at the state fair.
The Tap Water Taste Contest has been held in New York State since 1986 and is organized statewide by the Water and Wastewater Education and Outreach Committee. Committee members represent federal and state government agencies, professional associations, public and private organizations, community leaders, and training providers. Its mission is to elevate, promote, and attract talented individuals into the water profession, and to raise awareness of the value of water and wastewater services with the public and elected officials in New York State and nationwide.
